The Alqueva Dam, built in 2002, changed the face of this region of Alentejo. The Guadiana River grew, transformed, and we now have the Great Lake of Alqueva.
The Great Lake provides an additional incentive to visit this region, which boasts outstanding natural beauty and has retained its identity over time. The countryside, the people, the villages, the heritage, the culture, the fauna and flora – there are countless reasons to visit.
In the municipalities surrounding the Great Lake, you will find several points of interest, a rich historical heritage, beautiful hotels and rural tourism where you can experience the countryside and nature, restaurants where you can sample the best of Alentejo cuisine, leisure spots such as river beaches, and a unique starry sky without atmospheric or light pollution.
