Visit Monsaraz
Monsaraz is the most visited tourist destination in the municipality of Reguengos and in the Alqueva region. Located atop a hill with privileged views over the Alqueva reservoir, the medieval village of Monsaraz—enclosed within the castle walls, with its narrow streets and schist houses—is a must-see destination.
While in the medieval village of Monsaraz, visit the Keep Tower and take in the breathtaking views over the Alentejo plain and the Great Lake of Alqueva. Discover the various gates of Monsaraz, admire the charming clock tower, and explore its many corners and winding streets.
Near Monsaraz, discover the many remains left since ancient times by the peoples who inhabited this region, such as the Xerez Cromlech, the Outeiro and Bulhôa Menhirs, and the Dolmens of Olival da Pêga.
By the shores of the Alqueva reservoir you will find the Monsaraz river beach and the Nautical Centre, a leisure area where you can relax and enjoy the warm waters of Alqueva. Boat trips and a variety of water sports are available, along with a bar and restaurant.
Nearby is the Alqueva Lake Observatory. Thanks to the absence of light and atmospheric pollution, the Alqueva region is classified as a Dark Sky Reserve, making it a unique destination for astronomical observation.
