Monsaraz rests beside the Guadiana River, atop a hill rising from the Alentejo plain. It was conquered from the Moors in 1167 by Geraldo Sem Pavor (Gerald the Fearless) and later entrusted to the Knights Templar by King Sancho II for its defense and settlement.

For centuries, the Castle of Monsaraz served as a watchtower over the Guadiana, from where the border with Castile could be observed. It was the seat of the municipality until 1838, when this role was transferred to the parish of Reguengos.

The medieval village of Monsaraz, protected by its walls, is a small settlement with slate-paved streets and whitewashed houses. Its narrow lanes, full of charming corners, are set against a breathtaking backdrop overlooking the Alentejo landscape and the Alqueva reservoir.
