The village of Marmelar, formerly a parish of the Beja district, later part of the municipality of Cuba, and finally of Vidigueira, has origins that remain largely unknown. However, some architectural evidence reveals that it is a very old settlement.

Situated on the right bank of the Guadiana River, Marmelar has always offered favorable conditions for human habitation. The Antas de Corte Serrão testify to the region’s occupation during the Eneolithic period, when funerary monuments were built as part of rituals honoring the dead.

Also noteworthy and worth visiting is the Church of Santa Brígida in Marmelar.
