Alqueva Village belongs to the municipality of Portel, in the Évora district, and its patron saint is São Lourenço.

The first references to this village appear in documents from 1285. The name “Alqueva” derives from alqueive, meaning “fallow land” or “deserted land,” which accurately reflects the very dry and harsh soils of the parish. This was historically one of the main obstacles to the development of the region.

A few decades ago, a proposal was made to build a dam near the village to irrigate the land and bring development to a region whose main activity was agriculture.

The Alqueva Dam takes its name from this village.
