Walls of Serpa

The Walls of Serpa were built by order of Dinis of Portugal from 1295 onwards, with the purpose of protecting the medieval town within. Originally, there were three main gates: the Porta de Beja, the Porta de Moura, and the Porta de Sevilha. The Gates of Beja and Moura are imposing entrances flanked by large towers and still stand today, while the Gate of Sevilha no longer exists. At a later date, two additional openings were created: the Porta da Corredoura and the Porta Nova.
