The Town Hall Building dates back to 1646, constructed during the reign of King João IV with devotion to the Immaculate Conception.
The building has two floors. On the upper floor, a continuous row of balcony windows can be seen. The Pilate’s Balcony was once used for various theatrical performances. On the ground floor, the openings are marked by thick gridded bars, a reference to its former use as a public jail.
The building was reconstructed in 1876, with a plaque reading: “on the site of the old Town Hall.” At the western end of the building, at the top, there is a bell tower. The Town Hall itself was located on the upper floor, while the ground floor housed the public meat market. The old jail was located in a now non-existent building to the east of the current Municipal Hall.
