Santo Aleixo da Restauração Parish Church

Perched atop a hill, the Parish Church of Santo Aleixo da Restauração dominates the surrounding landscape and village rooftops.

The first church, dating from 1626, was destroyed in the early years following the Portuguese Restoration due to attacks by Castilian troops. In 1644, the church served as a refuge for the local population when the town walls could not withstand the invaders. The resistance at that time gave rise to the name of the parish, which became known as Santo Aleixo da Restauração.

Twenty years later, during the War of the Spanish Succession, the church was again threatened and partially destroyed. In 1733, it was rebuilt with three naves, while preserving the original main chapel.

Location

It is located in the center of Santo Aleixo da Restauração, at the highest point of the village.
