The Museu do Fresco is located in Monsaraz, in the building of the former Town Hall (Paços do Concelho), classified as a National Monument and built in the second quarter of the 14th century. Since 2010, it has hosted thematic exhibitions that explore the history and culture of the region.
The former Courtroom was decorated in the 15th century with a fresco that remained hidden behind a brick partition wall for centuries. It was only rediscovered in 1958 during restoration works. This unique example in Portugal, due to its rare profane subject matter, was thus saved from destruction.
This remarkable artwork represents the allegory of earthly justice, featuring the figures of the Good Judge and the Bad Judge as its central elements, highlighting traditional concepts of fairness and human corruption.
