The idea of creating a museum focused on the memories and identities of the past and future of the Luz and Alqueva territories dates back to the 1980s, within the context of defining compensatory measures to address the impacts resulting from the implementation of the Alqueva Dam project.
The museum opened to the public in 2003 and, in 2005, received an Honourable Mention from the Portuguese Museum Association, in the category of Best Museum in the Country.
