Located 2 km from Serpa, on a rise in the Alentejo plains known as the Serra de São Gens, stands the Hermitage of Nossa Senhora de Guadalupe, in a spot locally called “Altinho.”
Simple and modest in its Moorish-influenced (mudéjar) style, the chapel has no architectural treasures or elaborate decorations. Its charm comes from the bright whitewashed walls that reflect the intense Alentejo sun.
Inside, the dimly lit interior houses a small altar with the statue of the patron saint, measuring about 30 cm in height. She is the focus of the most important local festival, celebrated at Easter.
The festival of Nossa Senhora de Guadalupe begins with the arrival of spring on Good Friday and concludes the following Tuesday at Altinho.
