The Hermitage of Nossa Senhora das Pazes is located between Vila Verde de Ficalho and the border with Spain. It is an important site of pilgrimage and devotion for both Portuguese and Spanish visitors.
According to legend, long ago, during a confrontation between Portuguese and Spanish forces defending their borders, a mysterious figure appeared among the soldiers of both sides, recognized as a vision of the Virgin Mary. This gave rise to the name Nossa Senhora das Pazes (“Our Lady of Peace”).
The chapel features beautiful Manueline and Baroque architecture. Set in the countryside, it offers distant views of the village of Ficalho.
