Church of Nossa Senhora das Candeias, Mourão

The Church of Nossa Senhora das Candeias (Our Lady of the Candles) was built in 1681, in the Baroque architectural style. Following the 1755 earthquake, the church’s interior suffered severe damage and was later rebuilt by the Order of Avis. The church faces east and stands on 17th-century fortifications.

The main altar, the only element of the sanctuary, features a polychrome carved altarpiece with Solomonic columns and no surrounding ornamentation.

Inside the church is the statue of Our Lady of the Candles, displaying a Gothic-Manueline style. Carved from Ançã stone, the image measures approximately 1.20 metres in height.

The three bronze bells in the bell tower are modern, having been cast in 1946. Also noteworthy are several liturgical treasures belonging to the Brotherhood of the Blessed Sacrament, including: an 18th-century silver incense boat, an 18th-century white silver thurible, a gilded silver chalice from the reign of King João V, a 19th-century silver and gilt monstrance, a gilded silver filigree crown from the reign of King João V, and a pair of 19th-century white silver cruets.
