Church of Nossa Senhora da Estrela

The Church of Nossa Senhora da Estrela is located in Aldeia da Estrela, one of the riverside villages of the Alqueva region, now a peninsula surrounded by water. The village belongs to the parish of Póvoa de São Miguel in the municipality of Moura.

There is little documented information about the church, but it is believed to have been built in the 16th century, with the frescoes in the main chapel dating from this period. In 1856, the nave was expanded, and new paintings were added to the ceiling and walls.

At the top of the bell tower, visitors can see a stork’s nest, which has been there for many years and has become a distinctive feature of the church.
