The Castle of Noudar was built in 1307 during the reign of Dinis of Portugal and played a key role in defending the border with Castile throughout the 14th century.
It is located between the Ardila River and the Múrtega Stream, and this location was chosen for its natural defenses, with easy access to a water source, the Figueira fountain, and with good agricultural land and extensive pastures for grazing livestock.
During the Middle Ages, Barrancos grew in population and eventually surpassed Noudar. In 1774, the two towns shared the municipal seat, but by 1836 the municipality of Noudar ceased to exist.
Today, the castle is set in a site of remarkable natural beauty. The Ardila river winds around the fortress, the landscape remains largely untouched, and local flora and fauna thrive, making it a unique and highly recommended destination.
