Castle of Alandroal

Located at the highest point of the town of Alandroal, the Castle of Alandroal is a military structure built during the reign of King Dinis, between 1294 and 1298. It reflects a significant investment made by the Order of Avis in castles throughout the Alentejo region during this period.

An interesting feature is the cultural identity and background of its architect. As seen in the inscription on the right tower next to the castle gate, the person in charge of the construction identified himself as a member of the Muslim community, signing as “Eu, Mouro Galvo” (“I, Galvo the Moor”). This inscription is considered one of the most important Mudejar marks in Portugal. Another reflection of his cultural influence is a horseshoe-arched window in one of the towers, typical of Mudejar style.

Within the castle, you can find the Parish Church of Alandroal and the Keep Tower, where a clock was installed in 1744.

The castle was classified as a National Monument in 1910 and restored in the 1940s.
