Bulhoa Menhir

Chronology

This granite menhir was likely erected between the early 4th millennium and the mid-3rd millennium BC, fitting within the chronological framework generally attributed to the so-called “Évora megalithic universe.”

Description

Located in an area where rural and urban zones intersect, very close to the village of Monsaraz, this menhir stands in isolation, as is typical of such prehistoric monuments. It was found toppled in 1970, already missing its base, which had meanwhile been reused for other practical purposes.

The restoration of the base dates from that same period, allowing the menhir to be repositioned in what is believed to be its original location, although its top remains fractured.

Phallic in shape, this menhir stands about 4 metres high and 1 metre in diameter. It is richly decorated with engravings depicting solar motifs, a crook (staff), as well as broken, wavy, serpentine, and zigzag lines.

Location

Herdade da Abelhoa, on the road connecting the villages of Telheiro and Outeiro, in the parish of Monsaraz.
