Vidigueira is an Alentejo town in the municipality of Beja, well known for its high-quality wines.

There is evidence of human occupation in this region since prehistoric times, with the most significant archaeological heritage being the Roman ruins of São Cucufate. This 4th-century Roman villa may have been built over a 1st-century villa, which itself stood atop a Late Neolithic settlement.

The town is closely linked to Vasco da Gama, who was granted the title Count of Vidigueira in 1519 by King Manuel I. Vasco da Gama’s remains were buried in Vidigueira from 1539 until 1880, when they were transferred to the Jerónimos Monastery in Lisbon. On the town’s clock tower, you can read the inscription: “This bell was commissioned by the Count Dom Vasco, Admiral of India.”

The development of this region has long been tied to the excellence of its wine, already appreciated in the 15th century.
