Serpa, a very ancient town inhabited since remote times by various peoples, boasts a rich historical heritage and many places of interest to explore.

The town is dominated by its Castle and the city walls, built during the reign of Dinis of Portugal from 1295 onwards, which overlook the surrounding landscape. The monumental gates of Serpa, such as the Beja Gate (Porta de Beja) —next to which stands the Aqueduct —and the Moura Gate (Porta de Moura), provide access to the interior where the medieval town developed. In the historic center, you will find several narrow streets perfect for strolling on foot and discovering every corner, among small whitewashed houses, churches, and chapels.

Within the walls, visit the Castle, with what remains of its keep, the Parish Church, the Serpa Clock Tower—one of the oldest in the country—the Palace of the Counts of Ficalho, and the Church of São Salvador. You can also visit the Clock Museum and the Ethnographic Museum.

Near Serpa, visit the Hermitage of Nossa Senhora de Guadalupe. This spot, known locally as “Altinho,” offers beautiful views over Serpa and the surrounding landscape.

In the municipality of Serpa, there are several other places of interest, including Pias, Brinches, and the riverside village of Mina da Orada, where you will find the former magnetite mining site, now abandoned and flooded. You can also visit Aldeia Nova de São Bento and, closer to the border, Vila Verde de Ficalho, with its distinctive Church of São Jorge and the Ermida das Pazes.

To the south lies the Guadiana Valley Nature Park (Parque Natural do Vale do Guadiana), home to Pulo do Lobo, the largest waterfall in southern Portugal—a place of unique scenery that is well worth a visit.
