Visit Reguengos de Monsaraz

Reguengos de Monsaraz offers a variety of attractions for visitors.

In the town of Reguengos, you can explore the city center, where the beautiful Parish Church of Saint Anthony stands in Praça da Liberdade, alongside the city park. During the hot summer months, the Victor Martelo municipal swimming pools are perfect for a refreshing dip.

Reguengos is also the wine capital of the region. Named European Wine Capital in 2015, it is home to the country’s largest wine cooperative, CARMIM, with hundreds of members. Near the city, the renowned Herdade do Esporão offers a must-visit experience, with wine tastings, vineyard and cellar tours, visits to the olive oil mill, a shop, and a restaurant.

Within the municipality, Monsaraz stands out as the most visited destination in the region. Perched on a hill with stunning views over the Alqueva Lake, this medieval village, enclosed within the castle walls, features narrow streets and traditional schist houses—a true must-see.

While in the medieval village of Monsaraz, visit the Keep Tower and take in the breathtaking views over the Alentejo plain and the Great Lake of Alqueva. Discover the various gates of Monsaraz, admire the charming clock tower, and explore its many corners and winding streets.

Near Monsaraz, discover the many remains left since ancient times by the peoples who inhabited this region, such as the Xerez Cromlech, the Outeiro and Bulhôa Menhirs, and the Dolmens of Olival da Pêga.

By the shores of the Alqueva reservoir you will find the Monsaraz river beach and the Nautical Centre. A leisure area where you can relax and enjoy the warm waters of Alqueva. Boat trips and a variety of water sports are available, along with a bar and restaurant.

Nearby is the Alqueva Lake Observatory. Thanks to the absence of light and atmospheric pollution, the Alqueva region is classified as a Dark Sky Reserve, making it a unique destination for astronomical observation.

Between Reguengos and Monsaraz lies São Pedro do Corval, the largest pottery center in Portugal. Here, numerous workshops showcase the art of working clay, and visitors can purchase beautiful handcrafted pieces. Nearby, don’t miss the Lovers’ Rock (Rocha dos Namorados).

Further south are the villages of São Marcos do Campo, with its lovely church, and Campinho, which features a large picnic area by Alqueva Lake and facilities for overnight stays in camper vans.

At Cumeada, you will find the Official Observatory of the Dark Sky Reserve, where visitors can enjoy astronomical observation through modern telescopes, explore a permanent astrophotography exhibition, and visit a small museum featuring a hands-on meteorite.
