In Portel, there are many places worth visiting.

In the town itself, be sure to visit the Castle of Portel, located at the highest point of the village, offering wonderful views over the surrounding countryside. Near the castle, explore Largo D. Nuno Álvares Pereira, where you will find his statue, as well as the Town Hall and the Church of Mercy (Igreja da Misericórda). Further down, visit the Mother Church of Portel and the nearby Matriz Park, a pleasant green space next to the church.

Within the municipality of Portel lies the village of Alqueva, which gave its name to the famous Alqueva Dam. Nearby, you can visit the dam itself — a must-see landmark. Take in the impressive dam wall and admire this monumental engineering work, which completely transformed this inland region of the Alentejo.

Close to the village of Amieira, you will find several leisure areas, including the Amieira River Beach, the largest sandy beach on the Alqueva Lake. The beach is equipped with a lifeguard, parking area, restaurant, bar, changing facilities, and other amenities. Nearby is also the Amieira Marina, the departure point for cruises across the waters of Alqueva, as well as houseboats, offering a unique way to explore the region — staying overnight on board while visiting the various riverside villages along the Great Lake.

Among other places of interest in the municipality of Portel, visit the Church of Vera Cruz, home to the Santo Lenho (Holy Wood), a small fragment believed to be part of the True Cross of Christ. The viewpoints of Monte, São Bartolomeu do Outeiro, and São Pedro, near Portel, are also worth visiting for their magnificent panoramic views.

Near the village of Alqueva, you can also visit the Medronho Museum, where you can learn about the traditional process of producing medronho brandy. Visitors can enjoy tastings and purchase a variety of local products in the museum shop.
