Mourão is a village in the Alentejo region and the seat of the municipality. It is located on the left bank of the Guadiana River, close to the Spanish border, in an area of remarkable natural beauty.

There are few major historical references to this settlement before the Christian reconquest of the Iberian Peninsula. However, it is known that once it came under Portuguese rule, it was granted to the Order of the Hospitallers, and that during the Middle Ages and the Restoration War it was the scene of violent clashes between Portuguese and Castilian forces.

Because of its proximity to the Guadiana River, Mourão has long been shaped by its influence. The river greatly contributes to the fertility of the surrounding lands, where olive trees and various other fruit trees grow, creating the region’s characteristic landscape.

Mourão Castle occupies a commanding position overlooking the old medieval village. Within its walls stands the Mother Church of Nossa Senhora das Candeias, built in the 17th century.
