Moura, the county seat, is located at the eastern end of the Alentejo, on the left bank of the River Guadiana, and is bordered to the east by Spain. Surrounding it are the municipalities of Barrancos, Mourão, Reguengos de Monsaraz, Portel, Vidigueira and Serpa.

The name Moura comes from the legend of Moura Salúquia, a Moorish princess who committed suicide during the conquest of the city by the Christians upon learning of the death of her beloved.

Moura is a city with centuries of history. Taken from the Moors in 1166, it was lost and reconquered several times until it was finally conquered in 1295.

A city with an abundance of water, it has numerous fountains and several gardens, and is also known for its thermal baths and the water of Castello.
