Alqueva Itineraries
The Alqueva Lake, covering an area of 250 km² with around 1,200 km of shoreline, is the largest artificial lake in Europe and occupies a significant part of the inland Alentejo region.
Due to its vast size and the number of places of interest to visit, we suggest a selection of tourist routes that we hope will help you discover the Alqueva region more fully.
This itinerary is designed for those who wish to discover the essentials of the region. It is a circular route around the dam and can be started from any of the towns surrounding the Alqueva reservoir.
It is a full-day route, so comfortable clothing and footwear are recommended. You should also bring water bottles due to the region’s hot and dry climate. Don’t forget your camera…

A route through the riverside villages of Alqueva, across the municipalities of Alandroal and Olivença. We begin this itinerary in Reguengos de Monsaraz, continue up to the charming village of Alandroal, and visit the Juromenha Fortress. Along the way, we pass through the small village of Capelins and the town of Terena. We then return via Spain, visiting Olivenza and the riverside villages across the border, including Villareal and Cheles.

A journey through the riverside villages of Alqueva. From Serpa to Portel, we pass through several locations, from the small village of Mina da Orada to the Pedrógão Dam. We visit Marmelar, Vidigueira and the ruins of São Cucufate, and finally Monte do Trigo.

The construction of the Alqueva Dam created a reservoir covering 250 km², enabling a wide range of water-based activities in this inland region of the Alentejo. Boat trips are among the most popular activities, with several route options available.
On this occasion, we chose the shorter route of approximately one hour, combined with a package that includes a boat trip and a buffet lunch at the panoramic restaurant of Amieira Marina.
